  • Special lace-up shoes are worn in wrestling for both practice and in matches. Wrestling shoes have high ankles and a strong sole for mobility, traction and flexibility. Choosing the right shoe can make the difference between staying on your feet and getting pinned.
  • Each manufacturer’s shoes fit differently so don’t assume you’ll wear the same size in different brands. One rule of thumb is that wrestling shoes are ½ size larger than regular shoes (i.e. a size “10” may actually fit a size “9.5” foot) – another good reason to be sure to try on wrestling shoes before purchasing.
  • Experienced wrestlers prefer a snug shoe, but some beginners like more room. Keep in mind that wrestling shoes may stretch a bit over time, so give them a chance to get broken in.
  • Like other athletic shoes, wrestling shoes are available at different price points; some start as low as $40 and others can be as high as $160 or more. Don’t choose your shoe by cost alone; make sure the fit is right.
  • There are two types of soles found on wrestling shoes: the split-sole and the unisole. Most wrestlers prefer one or the other but generally the split-sole shoes have greater flexibility and can be more comfortable. The unisoles can give you more traction. The choice is yours!
