• Diabetes can cause severe complications with your feet. There may be very poor circulation/blood supply and nerve sensation may be reduced. These problems can lead to diabetic foot infection, diabetic foot ulcer problems, gangrene and possibly amputation. Good foot care, education and footwear can prevent some of these extreme consequences.

• Prevention is critical and there are some general guidelines to follow. Wash and check your feet everyday (for cuts, corns, other damage) and visit your podiatrist regularly.

• Avoid socks with tight elastic bands at the top, they may restrict circulation further. Choose clean, lightly padded socks that fit well.

• Choose appropriate footwear and be sure to always wear shoes. Diabetic footwear should have a high, wide toe box, removable insoles (with the option to insert orthotics), rocker soles (to reduce pressure on areas of the foot susceptible to pain) and firm heel counters for support and stability.

• Sandals and fabric shoes are often recommended for a diabetic foot. Shoes specifically made for people with diabetes are usually heavily padded to prevent pinching and rubbing and guarantee comfort. They are wider and roomier than regular shoes and their interior seams can be covered (or they have no interior seams at all).

• Exercise often and regularly, avoid smoking and get a doctor’s help with even common foot issues like corns, calluses or ingrown toenails.
